Open XIF File
The file whose extension is XIF, an acronym that comes from eXtended Image Format, was originally created for the ScanSoft Pagis scanning software.
About ScanSoft Pages
ScanSoft became Nuance Communications, then became a part of Kofax, a XEROX Subsidiary.
And Pagis is now called PaperPort, however the XIF file format is still supported by some Nuance applications.
The XIF extension file was designed as an extension to the TIFF-type format for storing text documents as images.
This XIF file separates the image into four layers:
- Text layer for optical character recognition (OCR)
- Text colors layer
- Layer of color image segments
- Background tint layer
