Open OPUS File
File extension OPUS is used by audio streaming files in Opus format (Ogg Opus). Opus is a lossy audio coding format designed to efficiently store general audio and speech in a single file format. Opus format was developed by Xiph.Org foundation. Opus files are not opened by Windows or OS X default players. In order to play them you need to use one of the following audio players which have support for OPUS file format:
- AIMP
- Amarok
- cmus
- Music Player Daemon
- foobar2000
- Mpxplay
- MusicBee
- SMplayer
- VLC media player
- Winamp and Xmplay
The Opus file format is used by Voice over IP (VoIP), in-game chat, video conferencing. Whatsapp messenger stores voice notes in Opus format.
Streaming in OPUS format is supported by major browsers including: Mozilla Firefox, Chromium, Google Chrome, Blink-based Opera. Safari introduced support for Opus in iOS11 and macOS High Siera. Microsoft Edge browser is also getting support for Opus.
