HDR files can be used for a variety of uses, for example:

High Dynamic Range Image File

The HDR extension files, in this application, are raster images or digital photos saved in the proprietary format of HDRsoft High Dynamic Range.

With this file, improvements are made to the image, especially in the range of color and brightness of the same.

The HDR file can be processed to correct dark shadows or areas of an image that have been washed out.

HDR software has the ability to compose multiple photos with different exposures to create a single image with a full and evenly distributed color range.

ESRI BIL Header File

In this case, HDR files have a header format and it is used as a GIS file which contains header information for BIL format files.

The HDR file is an auxiliary format where the layout and format of the BIL file is specified so that it can be parsed and placed in real coordinates when combined with a separate geo reference file.

In this case HDR files are stored in ASCII text format.
