Open AFM File

AFM extension files are font files that are recognized by the International Typeface Corporation (ITC).

More specifically, these fonts are considered PostScript fonts due to their multiple files.

Fonts installed on your computer or downloaded from the Internet may be available in these or other common font file types.

What is a PostScript font?

The ITC describes a PostScript font as one that includes a file for digital use and a separate file for printing because printers use different fonts than those displayed on screens.

These AFM font files are associated with this font type, rather than the more common True Type font with its TTF extension.

Because PostScript fonts consist of parts, there are several files for each font installation.

AFM files are a part of PostScript Type 1 files for the Macintosh operating system.

The Adobe Font Metrics file is a text document that includes information about the measurements and kerning, the spacing between letters, of the font.

This informational file is provided along with the base font file for programs that are not capable of automatically determining the kerning and metrics of font files.

However, the ITC describes that many programs are capable of doing this and the AFM file may not be necessary.

AFM files cannot be opened and/or edited with any commercial program, by the user.
